Editor's Take

So here's the thing about WoodSpring Suites-it's basically the anti-hotel hotel, and I mean that in the best way possible. You know how most extended-stay places try to be everything to everyone? WoodSpring said "nah" and went a completely different direction.

Originally called Value Place when it launched in 2003 by Jack DeBoer, the brand rebranded to WoodSpring Suites in 2015 and now operates 256 hotels with over 30,000 rooms nationwide. But what makes them interesting isn't the size-it's the philosophy. They've been ranked #1 in guest satisfaction among economy extended stay hotel brands by J.D. Power for three consecutive years since 2023, which is kind of wild when you consider their whole model is about stripping things down to essentials.

And they really mean essentials. Every room's a suite with a full kitchen-full-size refrigerator with freezer, two-burner stovetop, and microwave-but here's the catch: they don't give you pots, pans, or even a coffee maker. You bring your own or buy a "Simply Cooking" pack at the front desk. Housekeeping is provided bi-weekly, not daily. Most locations don't have 24/7 front desks. It sounds minimalist because it is, but that's exactly how they keep rates so low.

The target guest? Business travelers, military personnel, medical professionals, and individuals or families in need of temporary housing. People who need a place for a week, a month, maybe longer-not tourists doing a quick overnight. The longer you stay, the better the rate gets, which is the whole point. All properties are new construction, with the average WoodSpring property built within the last seven years, so you're not dealing with that musty extended-stay vibe some chains have.

Choice Hotels acquired the brand in December 2017 for approximately $231 million, folding it into their portfolio alongside Comfort Inn and Quality. But WoodSpring still operates pretty independently, with each hotel franchised and run by different owners. That means policies can vary slightly location to location, though the core model stays consistent.

Notice how they're expanding into major metros-Miami, New York, Chicago, Dallas-where traditional extended stays cost a fortune? That's the play. They're not competing with Residence Inn on amenities. They're competing on price and practicality, betting that a growing chunk of travelers would rather save money and handle their own housekeeping than pay double for daily maid service they don't really need anyway.
