Editor's Take

So here's the thing about WSS-it's basically the neighborhood shoe store that grew up but never forgot where it came from. Started back in 1984 when founder Eric Alon was selling kicks at a swap meet (talk about humble beginnings), and now they've got over 150 stores scattered across California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Florida. That's some serious growth.

But what makes WSS different isn't just the numbers. Walk into any of their stores and you'll notice something-they're big, open, and every single style and size is just sitting there on display. No hunting down a sales associate to check "the back." No awkward hovering. You can browse at your own pace, try on what you want, and actually see what's available. It's refreshingly low-pressure.

The selection is kind of ridiculous, honestly. We're talking over 3,000 styles in stores and 7,000 online. Nike, Jordan, adidas, Vans, Converse, Puma, New Balance-all the heavy hitters are there. And they don't just do athletic shoes. Work boots, soccer gear, casual sneakers, clothing, accessories. Basically if it goes on your feet or helps you look good, they've probably got it.

Here's where it gets interesting though. WSS primarily serves urban and Latino communities, which has been a large reason for their growth. They're not trying to be everything to everyone-they know their audience and they show up for them. Community events, local hiring, giving back. Over 350 local events per year, according to their own numbers. That's not just marketing talk; that's actually being present.

Price-wise? They're competitive. Free shipping over $99, rewards program where you get $10 back for every $250 spent, and they're constantly running deals. BOGO 50% off on socks, bundle deals on tees, weekly specials. The kind of stuff that actually matters when you're shopping for a whole family.

And speaking of family-Foot Locker bought them for $750 million back in 2021. So yeah, they're legit. But they've kept that neighborhood vibe intact, which is probably why people keep coming back.

One more thing worth mentioning: their rewards program is actually useful. Earn points whether you shop online or in-store, get early access to releases, birthday perks. Nothing groundbreaking, but it works. And in a world where every retailer wants you to download their app and join their program, WSS at least makes it worth your while.
