Editor's Take

So here's the thing about XCVI - and yeah, the name is literally just "96" in Roman numerals, marking the year they started - they're kind of the anti-fast-fashion brand you didn't know you needed. Designed in Los Angeles for nearly 30 years, this women's clothing line has basically built its entire identity around one simple premise: what if your clothes actually worked for your real life instead of just looking good on Instagram?

The brand was founded in 1996 by Gita Zeltzer, who joined with her son and husband to launch the first collection from the back of a small storefront on Melrose Avenue. And honestly, that scrappy origin story still shows up in their design philosophy today. They're not trying to dress you for Fashion Week. They're trying to dress you for, like, Tuesday afternoon when you've got errands, a coffee date, and maybe a last-minute Zoom call all crammed into three hours.

What makes XCVI different is their obsession with fabric technology without being obnoxious about it. The secret is XCVI's ingenious use of stretch in its woven fabric as well as their strategic integration of knit panels. Translation? Stuff that looks polished but feels like you're wearing your favorite loungewear. They use carefully sourced non-toxic dyes and high-quality, durable fabrics, which means these pieces actually last instead of falling apart after five washes.

The brand operates three main collections: the core XCVI line with timeless pieces, Wearables (their best-sellers in seasonal colors), and CORE (year-round essentials in neutral shades). Prices typically range from around $68 for basic tops to $119 for cargo pants, putting them solidly in the contemporary category - not cheap, but not designer-level either.

Here's what's interesting: XCVI is still family-run after nearly three decades, which is pretty rare in fashion. XCVI's women-owned, women-led brand has managed to stay true to its original vision while the industry around it went crazy with trends and disposable clothing. They sell primarily through their website and wholesale to boutiques, though they did experiment with pop-up mall stores in California back in 2014.

The vibe is very California casual-chic - think wide-leg pants, flowy dresses, comfortable joggers, and elevated basics in earthy tones. It's the kind of stuff that works whether you're running to the grocery store or meeting friends for brunch. Not groundbreaking, but reliably good. And sometimes that's exactly what you need.
