Editor's Take

So here's the thing about XTRATUF-it's basically Alaska's unofficial state shoe. And that's not hyperbole. Walk through any harbor from Sitka to Kodiak and you'll see these iconic brown neoprene boots on just about everyone. They call them 'Alaskan Sneakers,' which kind of tells you everything you need to know.

The brand started back in the 1950s when BF Goodrich commissioned these boots specifically for commercial fishermen. The design was dead simple but brilliant: a chevron outsole that actually grips wet boat decks (not just claims to), and a neoprene lining that keeps fish oils from soaking through. Because apparently that's a real problem when you're hauling in salmon all day. Over 50 years later, that same basic design is still what people swear by.

But here's where it gets interesting. XTRATUF has had kind of a wild corporate journey. Started in Rock Island, Illinois, got bought by Honeywell in 2008, then they moved production to China in 2011-which caused a massive uproar. People were not happy. Quality complaints rolled in, an Alaska senator even wrote a letter asking them to bring manufacturing back. Eventually Rocky Brands bought the whole operation in 2021 for $230 million, and they've been working to restore that reputation ever since.

What makes these boots stick around isn't just nostalgia, though. They're legitimately built for the worst conditions you can imagine. Triple-dipped rubber construction, 100% waterproof, slip-resistant ratings that actually mean something (they use ISO standards, not just marketing speak). Commercial fishermen-people whose lives literally depend on not sliding off a deck-trust them. That's the kind of endorsement you can't buy.

And XTRATUF isn't just sitting on its legacy. They've expanded beyond the classic Legacy Boot into casual footwear, partnered with the Salmon Sisters for some genuinely cool designs, and they're pushing into new markets. They recently became the official boot of USRowing heading into the 2028 Olympics. Which seems random until you think about it-rowers need the same thing fishermen do: grip on wet surfaces and gear that won't quit.

The brand's tagline is 'Alaska Proven. Built for All,' and that's actually their strategy in a nutshell. Take what works in the most brutal environment in America and sell it to everyone else who just wants really good boots. Whether you're on a fishing boat in the Bering Sea or just walking your dog in the rain, the boots do the same job.

One thing that's kind of fascinating-XTRATUF has become this cultural icon in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest without really trying. It's not flashy marketing or celebrity endorsements. It's just decades of people wearing the same boots, telling their friends, and those boots not falling apart. That's rare these days.
