Dry winter air can make skin injuries slower to heal.

When temperatures drop, so does the humidity in the air. That means there’s less moisture available to keep your skin naturally hydrated. Indoor heating pulls even more moisture out of the environment and out of your skin.

As a result, skin becomes:
  • More prone to cracking or irritation
  • Dry and tight
  • Slower to recover from small scrapes, cuts, or pressure points

Even minor dryness can weaken the skin barrier, making it harder for your body to protect itself and repair small injuries especially for anyone with sensitive skin, diabetes, reduced mobility, or frequent handwashing.

Simple ways to help:
Apply a moisturizer or skin protectant daily
Use warm (not hot) water when washing hands
Drink water regularly even when you don’t feel thirsty
Add moisture back into the air with a humidifier if possible
