Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Charlotte FC-they're basically the new kid who showed up and immediately made everyone pay attention. And not in that annoying try-hard way, but more like they just belonged there from day one.
The club's home debut at Bank of America Stadium on March 5, 2022, was played before a crowd of 74,479-at the time, the largest single-match crowd in MLS history. That's not a typo. Seventy-four thousand people showed up to watch an expansion team play their first home game. In a league where some teams struggle to fill 20,000 seats, Charlotte basically said "hold my sweet tea" and packed the place.
But it's more than just numbers. Charlotte Football Club is an American professional soccer club based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The club competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Eastern Conference. The team is owned by David Tepper, who was awarded the expansion franchise on December 17, 2019. It began play in the 2022 MLS season as the league's 28th franchise. They're part of something bigger-Tepper Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the Carolina Panthers. That means they share Bank of America Stadium with an NFL team, though for most matches they cap attendance around 38,000 to create a more intimate soccer atmosphere.
The club's identity is deeply rooted in regional pride. Notice how they're not just "Charlotte" FC-they're for the entire Carolinas. From the mountains to the coast, they've positioned themselves as the soccer team for everyone in both North and South Carolina. Their motto "For The Crown" plays on Charlotte's nickname as the Queen City, and their supporters have embraced it with the kind of passion usually reserved for college football in this part of the country.
Charlotte FC reached an agreement in August 2022 with Levine Properties to house the site at 8600 McAlpine Park Drive in East Charlotte. Atrium Health Performance Park is home to Major League Soccer's Charlotte FC, MLS NEXT Pro's Crown Legacy FC, and the Charlotte FC Academy. The 52,000-square-foot facility houses approximately 200 employees and coaches, as well as players, and the entire business operations staff. This isn't some makeshift training ground-it's a proper, purpose-built facility that signals they're in this for the long haul.
The on-field story has had its ups and downs, as you'd expect from an expansion team. They missed the playoffs in their inaugural season despite spending big on transfers, but they've shown flashes of brilliance. The supporters' culture is already well-established, with five officially recognized groups creating an electric atmosphere in the east end of the stadium. Before kickoff, fans lock arms and perform "the Poznań" to the Farruko song "Pepas"-a tradition that's become synonymous with Charlotte FC match days.
What makes Charlotte FC interesting is how they've tapped into something that was already there. The Carolinas have a long soccer history that people outside the region don't always appreciate. The Charlotte area has been home to several lower-division soccer teams, dating back to the Carolina Lightnin' in the early 1980s. The Lightnin' won the American Soccer League championship in 1981 in front of 20,163 people at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Charlotte FC isn't creating soccer culture from scratch-they're giving it a proper home at the highest level.
The club plays in a stadium that underwent $50 million in renovations specifically for soccer, including new locker rooms, a supporters' bar, and field-level seating. They've got a mascot named Sir Minty (an anthropomorphic soccer ball with a crown and cape), they've got the infrastructure, and most importantly, they've got the fans. Whether they can translate all that support into sustained success on the field remains to be seen, but one thing's clear: Charlotte FC has already changed the soccer landscape in the Southeast.
