A Different Way to Engage on Sunday Morning!
A couple years ago, The Branch Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan decided to ditch the sermon on Sunday morning and instead spend time doing something else, something they chose, with others in their community. Pastors Chris DeBlaay and Teresa Kinnear called it “Group Sunday.”
What are Group Sundays?
Group Sundays are a way to engage differently on Sunday mornings. While the typical worship service is incredibly important and valuable for members of the church, so is the community found within. Instead of engaging with a sermon, Group Sundays offer a time to engage with those who worship together every week.
The groups can look different for each congregation, but offering options around different disciplines can be helpful in creating a space for everyone. Do some people want to move? Find a way to do that. Do others want to use their hands to create? A group based around art is a great option. In connecting over shared interests, members can learn more about one another and build relationships.
Group Sundays have additional benefits too!
