So here's the thing about Dobbs Tire & Auto Centers-they're basically the automotive equivalent of that reliable friend who's been around forever. Since 1976, this family-owned operation has been doing the tire and auto repair thing in the St. Louis area, and honestly? They've gotten pretty good at it.
What started as one store in Yorkshire Plaza in south St. Louis has grown to 97 locations across Missouri, Illinois, Texas and Ohio. That's some serious expansion, especially when you consider they've managed to stay family-owned through all of it. More than 600 Dobbs associates assist customers with maintaining and repairing their vehicles daily, which gives you an idea of just how big this operation has become.
And they're not just sitting still. Recent acquisitions of Longview, Texas-based Automotive Super Center (ASC), Columbia, Missouri-based Custom Complete Automotive (CCA) and Cleveland, Ohio-based Conrad's Tire Express & Car Care show they're serious about growth. The Conrad's deal alone brought 39 locations across northeast Ohio into the fold.
But here's where it gets interesting-and a bit complicated. Dobbs has an average rating of 2.6 from 1096 reviews, with the rating indicating that most customers are generally dissatisfied. That's... not great. You'll find plenty of stories about customers feeling like they got the runaround or were sold services they didn't need. It's the kind of stuff that makes you wonder if rapid expansion sometimes comes at the cost of consistent service quality.
On the flip side, they employ expert ASE-certified technicians and carry major tire brands including Goodyear, Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, Pirelli, Cooper, BFGoodrich, Sumitomo, Kelly, and Crosswind tires, plus provide complete automotive services for all types of vehicles, including gas, hybrid, and electric vehicles. The infrastructure is definitely there for quality work.
Peak revenue was $100.0M in 2023, so they're clearly doing something right from a business perspective. And Audax Private Equity and Golub Capital have invested in the company, which suggests there's confidence in their growth strategy.
The convenience factor is real-you can schedule service appointments online at any of their locations, and they're pretty much everywhere in the St. Louis metro area. Most locations are open Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Saturday 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, which is actually pretty accommodating.
Honestly? I think Dobbs represents both the promise and the pitfalls of scaling a local business. They've got the reach, the resources, and the brand recognition. Whether they can maintain the family-owned feel while managing nearly 100 locations-well, that's the million-dollar question.
