THE ART OF JACQUARD
Frette is renowned for its mastery of jacquard weaving, a technique that has shaped the brand’s intricate textiles for generations. Introduced in the early 19th century, the jacquard loom revolutionised weaving by allowing artisans to create complex patterns directly within the fabric rather than printing them on the surface. This innovation quickly became central to Frette’s craft, enabling the creation of richly detailed linens for private residences, royal families, and the world’s most distinguished hotels.
Building on this tradition, Frette further advanced the art of weaving with the creation of the Vincenzi loom in 1880, an innovation designed to enhance the precision and complexity of jacquard production. This evolution allowed for even more refined patterns, strengthening the brand’s reputation for exceptional craftsmanship.
HOW A JACQUARD LOOM WORKS
Unlike traditional looms that lift groups of threads together, a jacquard loom controls each warp thread individually. Historically, this was achieved using a sequence of punched cards that directed which threads were lifted with every pass of the weft. Row by row, the loom builds the pattern into the structure of the textile itself, creating depth, dimension, and lasting clarity of design.
Today’s jacquard looms use more advanced technology, but the principle remains unchanged. Each thread is guided with extraordinary precision, allowing Frette artisans to bring even the most intricate designs to life.
