Editor's Take
Picture this: over 30,000 people gathering for what's basically become one of the country's largest barbecue and music festivals, but here's the thing that'll get you right in the feels - every single bite, every beer, every dance move is all for kids battling pediatric brain cancer.
Hogs for a Cause started back in 2009 with a simple pig roast for one little boy named Ben Sarrat. Fast forward to today, and we're talking about a festival that's distributed over $12 million in giving, including over 1,800 direct grants to families fighting pediatric brain cancer. That's not just impressive - that's life-changing money.
So what actually happens at this thing? You've got 90 competing barbecue teams and 20 bands spread across multiple stages, all set up on the UNO Lakefront Arena Festival Grounds at 6801 Franklin Avenue in New Orleans. We're talking everything from bacon boudin sushi (yes, that's a real thing) to traditional smoky ribs that'll make you question everything you thought you knew about barbecue.
But here's where it gets interesting - this isn't just your typical food fest where you show up, eat, and leave. The festival offers VIP experiences where you can actually be a judge, getting access to the Judge's Tent to feast on meals from competing teams and vote on winners. And if you're really looking to go all out, the Goin' Ham Super VIP tickets come with $150 pre-loaded on a wristband, guaranteed best views, on-site parking, and judging privileges.
The festival runs for two days each April - gates open Friday at 3:30pm and Saturday at 11:00am. Friday's all about Bacon & Wings Night, while Saturday brings the full BBQ experience. Music goes until about 10pm on Friday (though afterparties can last until morning), and Saturday wraps up around 7:30pm with an award ceremony going until about 10pm.
And honestly? The fact that kids 10 and under get in free says everything about what this event is really about. It's not just a festival - it's a community coming together, one plate of barbecue at a time.
