Hey Neighbor, Root knot nematodes and wireworms are two of the most troublesome pests for the home gardener. While there’s no quick fix, there is a proven, all-natural treatment. Our friends in the Netherlands have developed a biofumigant crop called Caliente Mustard. Unlike edible mustard, this special variety was bred to contain high levels of isothiocyanates—a natural compound released when the plant is incorporated into the soil. When the leaves are cut, the release of isothiocyanates creates a gas that kills certain soil-borne pests and pathogens. -
When to Plant: For zones 7–10, sow in the fall. You can broadcast or plant in rows as you would traditional mustard. Fertilize well and water consistently—your goal is to grow large, healthy plants. -
Timing: Incorporate the crop into the soil within two weeks after the first bloom for maximum biofumigation effect. How to Incorporate -
Mow and Till Quickly: Mow and work the crop into the ground immediately—ideally within 10–20 minutes. The gas is released through tears in the leaves, so the more surface area exposed, the better. -
Seal It In: Use a tiller to incorporate the crop. If you have a roller, pack the soil to help trap the fumigant. If not, cover the bed with a garden tarp and seal the edges with soil. -
Moisture Matters: Make sure the soil has good moisture (not soggy, but damp). Try to time incorporation after a rainfall if possible. -
Wait and Work: Leave the treated soil covered for 14–21 days. Added Benefits Beyond pest control, Caliente Mustard contributes a significant amount of biomass back into your soil, enriching its structure and fertility. This is the best solution we know for nematodes and wireworms—and the best part? It’s completely natural. | | - Spray, spray, spray. We are having a time controlling whiteflies!
