Hey neighbor! As winter sets in, some crops are on hold until next season, which means it’s the perfect time to store your seeds properly. You might be wondering, “Am I storing these the right way?” Don’t worry! Here are a few simple tips to help keep your seeds viable for spring. - Stay Dry: Make sure seeds are completely dried out before storing and avoid humidity in storage areas.
- Keep cool and Keep Dark: Avoid direct sunlight in favor of dim to zero lighting. Aim for an area with cool and (fairly) consistent temperatures like a refrigerator.
- Keep protected: Keep seeds in a moisture-proof airtight container. You can store individual seed paper packets together in these containers as well.
- Seeds that have high oil content do not store well, unlike seeds with low or no oil content. Crops like carrots, parsnips, onions and leeks have shorter seed life. Storing them in the freezer helps maintain good germination.
