Winter might be the slowest time for gardening, but that doesn't mean you have to stop. Cold weather months are the perfect time to get your garden in shape and ready for spring. Here's a few tasks you can do to make sure your next harvest is a breeze. | | - Prune and Trim: Cut away dead branches from fruit trees, bushes, shrubs, and roses. Winter is the perfect time to prune since there’s less foliage, making it easier to see what needs trimming.
- Protect Fragile Plants: Give spring-blooming and tender plants a little extra protection during the cold months. Use plant covers, tarps, or mulch to shield them from harsh frosts.
- Mulch: Add a layer of straw to help protect your soil from temperature swings and keep roots insulated.
- Continue to Compost: Keep composting through winter! When warmer weather returns, your pile will start “cooking” again and be ready for spring use.
- Turn Off the Water Supply: Prevent frozen pipes by turning off the water to any sprinklers or irrigation systems before temperatures drop.
- Prepare Your Tools: Clean, sharpen, and repair your tools now so everything’s ready to go once spring arrives.
- Test Your Soil: Make sure your soil has the best nutrients for you to begin planting in the spring. Winter is a good time to amend soil.
- Plan for Spring: Take inventory of your seeds and place early orders. It’s also a great time to research new varieties and plan what you want to grow in the upcoming season.
