THE DETECTORIST HEAT SURVIVAL GUIDE | | Peak summer has arrived, and many parts of the country are facing extreme heat and record-breaking temperatures. mmm A good hunt is never worth ignoring dangerous conditions. Before heading into the field, check your local forecast and build your plan around the heat. | | BEFORE THE HUNT Check the forecast and heat index, not just the temperature. Pack more water than you expect to need, bring sun protection, and let someone know where you will be hunting. | | | | TIME IT RIGHT Whenever possible, hunt early in the morning or later in the evening. Choose locations with nearby shade and set a turnaround time before the hottest part of the day. | | | | STAY AHEAD OF THE HEAT Drink water regularly instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. Slow your pace, take deliberate breaks, and pay attention to headaches, dizziness, nausea, weakness, or unusual fatigue. | | | | PROTECT YOUR GEAR Do not leave detectors, batteries, phones, or accessories sitting in a hot vehicle longer than necessary. Extreme interior temperatures can be hard on electronics and battery systems. | | | | KNOW WHEN TO CALL IT If conditions become worse than expected or you notice signs of heat illness, end the hunt. There will always be another target and another day to dig it. | | | | HUNT SMART, STAY SAFE, & KEEP SWINGING! | | | | |
