In 1994, high-profile Norwegian adventurer Lars Monsen placed an unusual ad in an outdoors magazine. He needed a companion for a grueling, 3,000 km trek across the Alaskan wilderness.

Over 40 people applied. Only one made the grade: a young hiker named Marit Holm. What followed was 10 months of blood, sweat, and tears—including 17 encounters with deadly grizzly bears.
