Wildlife & Waterfalls: Easy Fall Escapes Near Mount Rainier

Presented by Visit Rainier

When the air turns crisp, the foothills of Mount Rainier take on a different pace. In Eatonville and Elbe, fall brings quiet trails, wildlife on the move, and a few welcoming places to stop between adventures.

Begin at Alder Lake, where the mountain rises above the water, sometimes with a fresh dusting of snow. Along the shoreline, bigleaf maple glows gold, vine maple shifts to orange and crimson, and red alder drops yellow leaves that drift in the shallows.

Follow the Wildlife & Waterfalls itinerary to see the season’s highlights. One stop leads to Mashel Falls. The trail winds through evergreens and deciduous trees before reaching a series of cascades. In October, huckleberry turns the understory a deep crimson, and the sound of the water carries through the canyon.

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park offers another way to explore. A tram or guided Keeper Adventure Tour takes you into a 435-acre free-roaming area where bison, elk, moose, and mountain goats live much as they have for generations. Forest paths lead past smaller native species, and Horseshoe Lake frames one of the best views of Rainier within the wildlife park.

In Elbe, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad pulls vintage passenger cars through the forest and foothills. Fall color edges the hillsides, and the steady rhythm of the train recalls an earlier era.

Between outings, Eatonville and Elbe welcome visitors with local cider, coffee, and markets. Lodging ranges from rustic cabins to working farms, many just a short drive from the itinerary’s highlights.

This corner of the Rainier region is close enough for a day trip yet worth an overnight stay. The Wildlife & Waterfalls itinerary makes it easy to experience the best of it in any season, but fall gives it a beauty all its own.
