You know what's fascinating about Subway? It's basically the McDonald's of sandwich shops, but somehow way more personal. Think about it-when you walk into a McDonald's, your Big Mac is assembled by someone you can't see, following a recipe that hasn't changed since the Carter administration. But at Subway, there's this whole theater of sandwich construction happening right in front of you.
The numbers are pretty staggering when you dig into them. As of September 2023, Subway has over 37,000 locations in more than 102 countries and territories, with more than half its locations (21,796 or 61.1%) in the United States. It is the largest single-brand restaurant chain and the largest restaurant operator in the world. That's more locations than McDonald's, which is wild when you think about it.
But here's where it gets interesting-and kind of messy. Subway was recently acquired by Roark Capital for $9.6 billion, ending six decades of family ownership. That's a massive shift for a company that built its identity on being the scrappy alternative to big corporate fast food.
The whole "Eat Fresh" thing isn't just marketing fluff, either. Since their beginning, they've always been obsessed with fresh-whether it's their fresh baked bread, their healthy store-sliced veggies, or their signature subs made fresh to order. And honestly, you can taste the difference. That bread smell when you walk in? That's not an accident.
What's really clever about their model is how they've managed to scale customization. Most fast food places give you maybe three choices-small, medium, large. Subway gives you like 47 decisions to make before you get to the register. Bread type, meat, cheese, vegetables, sauce, toasted or not... it's almost overwhelming, but in a good way. You're basically the chef of your own sandwich.
The franchise model is interesting too. Subway restaurants are owned and operated by Subway franchisees - a network that includes thousands of dedicated entrepreneurs and small business owners - who are committed to delivering the best guest experience possible in their local communities. So that person making your sandwich might actually have a stake in whether you come back.
