Editor's Take
So here's the thing about Ridge Wallet - it's basically become the poster child for doing one thing really, really well. And by "one thing," I mean completely reimagining what a wallet should be in an era where most of us are drowning in stuff we don't actually need.
The company launched via Kickstarter back in 2014, and these ultra-thin, metal-clad wallets with RFID protection have found their way into the pockets of over 2 million people worldwide, pulling in $50 million in sales in 2020 alone. That's not nothing. But what's really interesting isn't just the numbers - it's how they got there.
Ridge basically took the George Costanza wallet problem (you know, that overstuffed monstrosity throwing your back out) and said "what if we just... didn't?" The result is this minimalist front-pocket wallet that holds 1-12 cards between two metal plates - aluminum, titanium, or carbon fiber, depending on how fancy you want to get. Prices range from around $75 to $175 for their Damascus design. It's RFID-blocking, expandable, and comes with either a cash strap or money clip.
Now, the genius part isn't really the product itself (though it's solid). It's how they've marketed it. Ridge sponsored roughly 750 YouTube influencers in 2020, spending $3.9 million on 3,000 unique videos - that's 10 new videos a day featuring their wallet. If you've spent any time on YouTube in the past few years, you've probably seen a Ridge sponsorship. They're everywhere, and that's entirely intentional.
The company's built around this philosophy of "do more with less" - which sounds like marketing speak until you realize they actually mean it. Ridge is for those who want to choose wisely and carry forever, rather than fast fashion, disposable culture and inconsistent values. They back that up with a lifetime warranty and a 99-day return window, which is pretty generous when you think about it.
What's kind of fascinating is how Ridge has become almost synonymous with this style of wallet. Like Kleenex or Zippo, people just call these metal minimalist wallets "Ridge wallets" even when they're knockoffs. And there are a lot of knockoffs - dozens of copycats trying to undercut them on price or add features. But Ridge keeps growing, which tells you something about brand loyalty and quality.
The company started in 2013 as a father-son project, did about $6-7 million by 2016 (mostly organic growth), then brought in serious marketing talent in 2017 and things really took off. They've since expanded beyond wallets into keycases, phone cases, bags, and other everyday carry gear, but the wallet remains their flagship.
The interesting tension here is that wallets aren't exactly a repeat-purchase product. People buy one every seven years or so. So Ridge has had to get creative about expanding their product line and building a brand that people want to engage with beyond just that initial wallet purchase. They're selling into a lifestyle - the minimalist, intentional, quality-over-quantity crowd.
Is it worth the price? That depends on what you value. You can definitely find cheaper alternatives that do basically the same thing. But Ridge has nailed the execution, the warranty, the customer experience, and yeah, the marketing. Sometimes you're paying for the peace of mind that comes with a company that's been doing this for over a decade and has worked out all the kinks.
